Cortical sensorimotor signal flow

Sensory information is actively gathered by animals. For example, we move our eyes to carefully look at interesting parts of the visual scene and we move our fingers to touch objects so that we can examine their shape and texture. The flow of sensory information into the brain is therefore in part determined by self-generated movements. Equally, our movements are carried out under sensory guidance. In order both to interpret sensory information and to control movement, it is therefore critical for the brain to integrate information across sensory and motor centers. Here, we will review current knowledge of sensorimotor integration in the mammalian neocortex specifically in the context of the sense of touch.
