(Click image to start movie) Observations from the C2 coronagraph on board SOHO, showing two coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The second one (NE limb, upper right) results in the acceleration of high-energy particles, which reach the spacecraft almost immediately (on a time scale as short as a few minutes), producing the intense pattern of particle tracks in the detector. The SOHO spacecraft is in deep space, near the L1 Lagrangian point, and therefore not shielded by the Earth's magnetic field from these particles.
