On Natural scenes, gender and identity of faces can be perceived in the near absence of attention

[LMW comment: This doesn't seem so remarkable to me - I think there is some top-down attention available for the peripheral stimuli, and it is sufficient to allow detection of features for which there are tuned detectors ("yellow-volkswagen detectors") in the visual system - such as faces, animals, cars, etc. - but not sufficient to make a discrimination that requires close spatial attention to the local spatial phase of stimuli that arouse the same subset of neurons.]
