Edward Ott (b. December, 1941) earned his bachelor's degree from The Cooper Union in the field of electrical engineering in 1963. He received his master's and doctoral degrees in electrophysics from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1964 and 1967. After a postdoctoral year at Cambridge University, he became a professor of electrical engineering at Cornell University. In 1979, Professor Ott became a faculty member of the University of Maryland at College Park. Currently, he is a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Physics.

Dr. Ott's current research is on the basic theory and applications of nonlinear dynamics. Some of his current research projects are in wave chaos, dynamics on large interconnected networks, chaotic dynamics of fluids, and weather prediction.

Dr. Ott is an author of over 300 papers published in scientific journals. He is the author of the book "Chaos in Dynamical Systems" - an introduction to concepts in chaotic dynamics for scientists and students; he is also an editor of the book "Coping with Chaos", which is a collection of reprints that focuses on how scientists observe, quantify, and control chaos. Edward Ott has been listed by the Institute for Scientific Information as one of the world's 100 most cited physicists.

Dr. Ott was features author of Scholarpedia in December of 2006.
