In traditional evolutionary algorithms, genomes of candidate solutions are translated into phenotypes whose fitness is assessed. In evolutionary robotics, the behaviour of the robot can also be characterised during task execution, which enables evolution to be guided by the search for novel or diverse behaviours instead of fitness.
