The powerful and impulsive solar flare of January 20, 2005, observed in the EUV by TRACE (background images) and in soft (red) and hard (blue) X-rays by RHESSI. Note the formation of EUV ribbons in the lower atmosphere, with hard X-ray sources flickering on and off within them, and how coronal magnetic loops appear connecting them. The initial soft X-ray brightenings show that these loops result from the cooling of plasma originally at several x 106 K.
