Anil Seth was born in Oxford, England in 1972. He received his B.A. in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge in 1994, his M.S. in Knowledge-based Systems from the University of Sussex in 1996, and his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence from the University of Sussex in 2001. From 2001-2006 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow and then as Associate Fellow at The Neuroscience Institute in La Jolla, California. He is currently co-director of the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science and Reader (Associate Professor) in the School of Informatics at Sussex University. He also directs the Neurodynamics and Consciousness Laboratory at Sussex. While at The Neurosciences Institute, Anil witnessed the creation of Scholarpedia (as he was 5 feet away from Scholarpedia's founder, Dr. Eugene M. Izhikevich). He was the second person to register with Scholarpedia (after Dr. Izhikevich).
Dr. Seth's research interests include consciousness, theoretical neuroscience, neuroimaging, artificial life, and adaptive behavior. His primary focus lies in integrating theoretical and experimental approaches to uncovering the neural mechanisms underlying consciousness, and has published many papers on the topic, such as “The Grand Challenge of Consciousness” and “The Cognitive Neuroscience of Consciousness.” In 2009 he helped found the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science with the aim of bringing together the basic science of consciousness with its clinical application, especially in neuropsychiatry.
