The Encyclopedia for Play Science outlines the current understanding of the breadth and depth of play behavior.

Researchers are examining play through more lenses than ever before. The many approaches to the study of play enrich the tapestry of our understanding; however it is currently a fragmented and unwieldy body of knowledge. The Encyclopedia seeks to bring various thought leaders in Play Science under one roof. Play is an interdisciplinary subject, and as such, the entries hail from fields as diverse as evolutionary biology, cognitive psychology and neuroscience.

The Encyclopedia of Play Science is organized and maintained by the National Institute for Play.

Initial support for the Encyclopedia was provided by the International Playground Equipment Manufacturers Association and the U.S. Play Coalition.
