Scholarpedia:'Encyclopedias of' proposal
Contents |
Purpose
Why do we have encyclopedias?
- Group articles thematically
- Provide recognition of the work done by Editors
- Help with ensuring adequate topic coverage
Basic design
Create a new namespace that is only editable by Editors. It will be free-form, and up to each Editor how he or she would like to organize the encyclopedia page(s) they decide to adopt.
Format
Encyclopedia:[Name of topic]
E.g.
Encyclopedia:Computational neuroscience Encyclopedia:Physics
Roles
We expect that rough consensus will determine who maintains a particular encyclopedia.
All other individuals involved do not have formal titles -- this can be done on an encyclopedia-by-encyclopedia basis (e.g., certain encyclopedias might be big, and perhaps require a hierarchy/division of responsibilities, while others might be small).
Creation rights
All and only those with Editor or higher rights can create pages (encyclopedias) within the Encyclopedia: namespace. Anything created there is counted as an encyclopedia.
Editing rights
All those with Assistant Editor or Editor rights can edit pages (encyclopedias) within the Encyclopedia: namespace.
Functionality deployment
All existing "Encyclopedia of ..." pages would be emptied and turned into redirects to their appropriate encyclopedias.
- What to do about "published" encyclopedias, that have DOIs etc.?
Persons responsible
- Moving pages, creating redirects: Leo Trottier
- Announcing changes on all-editors listserv: Leo Trottier
- Assenting to the changes, being aware of their consequences, etc: all existing Editors
Time-line
- Announcement to all-editors: July 30th
- Set up redirects from all existing encyclopedias: August 15th
