Dr. Abir Bandyopadhyay obtained his Doctorate Degree from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur under the supervision of Prof. Jagdish Rai Luthra, after the terminal illness of his previous supervisor, Late Prof. Satish Kumar Sharma. His doctoral research was in the broad area of Quantum Optics & Quantum Electronics, specifically on Angular Momentum Coherence & Squeezing and Photon-Phonon interaction. After submission of Dissertation, he started his career as Post-doctoral Fellow in the Laser Physics & Quantum Optics Division [Presently Quantum Optics & Quantum Information (QO&QI) Group of Theoretical Physics Division] at Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad. He worked on AC Stark splitting of Atomic Wave-packet in Optical Vortex under the supervision of Prof. Girish Sharan Agarwal (FRS), then Director of PRL. After working for one and half years at PRL, he joined Centre for Theoretical Studies [Presently Centre for High Energy Physics] at Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore as Research Associate (RA). He worked there for three years, though during the last two years he was availing Associateship at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNC-ASR), Bangalore. First couple of years he worked independently on the Quantum Properties, Propagation and Interaction of Elliptical Vortices. During the last year at IISc & JNC-ASR he worked on Surgical application of Ultrasonic Vortex under the supervision of Prof. Narendra Kumar, then Director of Raman Research Institute, Bangalore. Prior to his doctoral research he also worked on Muon catalyzed Sub-barrier Nuclear Fusion at Jadavpur University, Calcutta, under the guidance of Dr. Lali Chatterjee.

Dr. Bandyopadhyay joined Hooghly Engineering & Technology College, in incubation, as Assistant Registrar in February 2005. However, he continued teaching, whenever need arose. Spending about two and half years in that position, he relinquished the administrative responsibility to return back to teaching and research. He received Summer Research Fellowship 2008, jointly by Indian Academy of Science, Bangalore, Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi and National Academy of Science, India, Allahabad, to research on Nuclear Matter Equation of State at Finite Temperature, Incompressibility and Proton Radioactivity, in collaboration with Dr. Debashis Narayan Basu, under the supervision of Dr. Bikash Chandra Sinha, then Director of Variable Energy Cyclotron Center and Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata. 2010 onwards he relinquished his teaching responsibilities to devote completely to research. He has been offered four months' Associateship at PRL during April 2010-March 2012 to work in the QO&QI Group of Theoretical Physics Division on Vortices formed by quantized radiation field, in collaboration with Dr. Ravindra Pratap Singh. His present research interests include Foundation of Quantum Mechanics with applications to Quantum Computation and Quantum Information Theory.

Coming from an economically challenged family, Abir supported his residential schooling, from Rama Krishna Mission (RKM) Vidyapith, Purulia (RKMV/P), and RKM Residential College, Narendrapur, India, with Government of India Merit cum Means Scholarship (Ministry of Education and Social Welfare), and Merit cum Means Stipend (RKMV/P). He has published several Peer reviewed Research Articles. He has visited academic institutes across the country to deliver Talks on his research work and to attend/present in academic Conference/Meeting/Workshop/Schools(s). He has taught at different levels, in different academic institutes of the country. He is Member of the Optical Society of America, Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineering (SPIE), USA, and, the Institute of Physics (UK). He was a Member of the Local Organizing Committee of National Laser Symposium 1997, held at PRL, under the auspice of Indian Laser Association. His biography appears in the Marquis Who's Who in the World 2011.
