Rudolf Bayer (b. March 3, 1939) is professor emeritus of computer science at the Technical University of Munich. He is best known for the invention of data structures of B-tree (with Edward M. McCreight), UB-tree (with Volker Markl), and red-black trees.
Bayer received his Ph.D. (1966) from the University of Illinois. After working at Boeing Research Labs he became an associate professor at Purdue University. He was a professor of informatics at the Technical University Muenchen since 1972 and head of the Research Group Knowledge Bases at the Bavarian Research Center for Knowledge Based Systems (FORWISS). He consulted for IBM, Siemens, Amdahl, DEC, Deutsche Telekom and was a visiting professor at IBM, XEROX PARC, and at several universities in Japan, Australia, the US and Singapore. He is a cofounder of TransAction SW GmbH and holds two patents.
He is the winner of the 2001 ACM SIGMOD Edgar F. Codd Innovations Award and German Federal Cross of Merit.
His research interests include data structures, database systems, digital libraries, and data warehousing.
