    Roberta Klatzky was born in Duluth, Minnesota on January 6, 1947. She obtained her B.A. in mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1968 and her Ph.D. in psychology from Stanford University in 1972. She was then employed at the University of California, Santa Barbara where she was appointed to full professor in 1982. In 1993, she moved to Carnegie Mellon University where she served as Head of Psychology for ten years and is currently a Professor of Psychology. She has also been elected as a fellow in the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, the Society of Experimental Psychologists, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

    The impact of Dr. Klatzky's research has been recognized by numerous organizations, and she is listed in Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in American Education, Dictionary of International Biography, and Outstanding Scientists of the 20th Century. She has also performed Editorial duties for many well-respected peer-reviewed journals in her field, including IEEE Transactions on Haptics, Acta Psychologica, Perception & Psychophysics, and the Journal of Experimental Psychology, to name a few. She has done extensive service for national and international governmental agencies. In recognition of her work, in 2010 she was awarded a Humboldt Senior Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and she became the fourth recipient of the Kurt Koffka Medal from the Justus-Liebig-University of Giessen, Germany.

    Dr. Klatzky’s research focuses on human perception and cognition, particularly the perception and representation of space and perception in nonvisual modalities. She has done research on human haptic and visual object recognition, navigation under visual and nonvisual guidance, and perceptually guided action. Her work has application to navigation aids for the blind, haptic interfaces, exploratory robotics, teleoperation, and virtual environments.
