Ezra "Ted" Newman (b. Oct, 1929) was born in New York City and attended Bronx High School of Science. He received a B.A. from New York University (USA), and in his PhD studied mathematical physics and general relativity under Peter G. Bermann at Syracuse University. In 1955 he took a position on the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, staying there until active retirement as Professor Emeritus.

Dr. Newman is a past President of the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation and has hundreds of scientific papers to his credit. With his collaborator Roger Penrose, he developed the Newman-Penrose formalism, a technique frequently used in the study of general relativity. In addition to having his research published regularly, in retirement he also maintains his wilderness hiking hobby.
