Electrophysiology is the study of the electrical behavior and underlying mechanisms of cells and tissues. Biological information is processed and communicated by various physical modalities, but electrical signals, e.g. action potentials, synaptic and intrinsic membrane currents, are the most prominent in the nervous system.
