A few words about my Curriculum Vitae
I was born in Athens (Greece) and graduated from the University of Athens in Physics. After my graduation I came to France to prolong my studies. In 1977 I obtained my “Diplôme d’Etudes Approfondies (DEA)”, in 1979 my “Diplôme Troisième Cycle” and in 1983 my “Doctorat d’état” as a student of the PARIS XI university at Orsay.
In 1983 the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) [2] offered me a permanent position in the Saclay Nuclear Physics division. Since then I have been an employee of the CEA working in the domain of fundamental research in Nuclear Physics. From May 1985 to June 1986 I spent one year as a visiting scientist at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in the group led by Peter Braun Munzinger, Johanna Stachel and Peter Paul.
My early research interests in domains as different as compound nucleus reactions, statistical fluctuations, emission of high energy gamma rays, excitation of giant resonances in direct reactions, or the study of the excitation of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) in compound nucleus reactions,…. led me to participate in experiments performed in different laboratories like the tandem and the post-accelerated tandem of Saclay, the SATURN and the ALS accelerators at Saclay. During my stay at Stony Brook I participated in experiments at the Stony Brook LINAC, and the Oak Ridge and MSU facilities. Later on, when I became interested in the study of the structure of exotic nuclei through either the study of direct reactions or fusion processes involving light exotic nuclei, I participated in experiments at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna (Russia) and at the GANIL national facility. Since 1990 I have mainly concentrated my efforts on experimental studies carried out at the GANIL accelerator.
During my long scientific carrier I have been part of many scientific and program advisory committees and I have occupied different managerial positions. I would like to give here a quick look at the work of some of these committees. From 1993 to 1998 I was with Alex Mueller one of the scientific secretaries of the Spiral project international scientific committee, led by Ben Mottelson. This committee played an important role in shaping the Spiral facility and the associated scientific equipment. From 1994 to 1998 I accepted the presidency of GANIL’s scientific council. I was the first external president of this committee; until then this rôle was fulfilled by the head of GANIL. My successors have continued to enhance the rôle and the importance of this committee in GANIL’s scientific life. From 1998 to 2001, and at the request of the GANIL scientific council I participated in the work of a task group concerning the long range plan of the GANIL facility. The result of this work contributed to establishing the technical and scientific case for the SPIRAL2 project.
From 2001 to 2007 I was the head of the Saclay Nuclear Physics division [3] and from 2007 up to the present time I have been the deputy director of the Institute of Research into the Fundamental laws of the Universe (IRFU) [4]. Since 2007 and in my capacity as deputy director of the Institute (IRFU), I have contributed to the everyday life of the institute in domains as diverse as its scientific policy, national and international relations, human resources, communication and documentation. In parallel I am a member of the SPIRAL2 scientific council and editor of the European Physical Journal A. In 2009 I accepted the editorship of the on-line encyclopaedia Scholarpedia in the domain of nuclear physics and became scientific counsellor of the European program “CEA-Euro talents” in the domain of high energy physics and physics of the universe. In 2008 I was nominated “Research Director” by the CEA top management and in 2009 I was elected to membership of the GENCO (GSI exotic nuclei community). In parallel I continue to participate in review publications in my domain of interest, like "Fusion and direct reactions of halo nuclei at energies around the Coulomb barrier”, N. Research
Research interests
- En tant que président du conseil scientifique du GANIL j’ai conduit une réflexion sur son l’avenir à long terme, qui a débouché sur la publication d’un document de synthèse en septembre 2001.
- Dès 1990 je me suis fortement intéressé à la physique des noyaux exotiques. Ceci m’a conduit à accepter la responsabilité de la rédaction du rapport scientifique sur la physique avec SPIRAL.
- En 1998 et 1999 j’ai accepté la responsabilité scientifique pour le DAPNIA des projets VAMOS et super lourds au GANIL.
- De 1986 à 1990 je me suis intéressé à l’excitation des résonances géantes et ceci dans le cadre de vastes collaborations internationales (Canada-Italie-Pays Bas-U.S.A). Ce programme à conduit à plusieurs publications.
