Igor Timofeev was born in 1961 in Odessa, Ukraine. He received his diploma as Teacher of Biology and Chemistry in 1983 from the Odessa State University where he was recruited in 1985 as a Lecturer for the Department of Human and Animals Physiology. In 1993 he completed a Ph.D. in physiology at the Bogomolets Institute of Physiology (Kiev, Ukraine) and moved to Canada in 1994 for postdoctoral training in the laboratory of Professor Mircea Steriade. Dr. Timofeev is currently Associate Professor at Université Laval (Québec, Canada).
Dr. Timofeev has received various awards and distinctions, including being named International Scientist of Year (2003) from the Cambridge Biographical Center, and holding the titles of Canadian Institute of Health Research Scholar (2003-2008) and National Researcher of “Fonds de Recherche en Santé du Québec” (Québec’s Health Research Fund, 2008-2012). He has authored numerous original publications and reviews and was Editor-in-chief in 2007 of a book entitled “Mechanisms of spontaneous active states in the neocortex” published in 2007. He is also on the editorial boards of The Open Journal of Neuroscience, Frontiers in Integrative Neuroscience, and Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience.
Dr. Timofeev investigates cellular mechanisms of epilepsy and sleep in thalamocortical networks of in vivo cats. Among his noteworthy achievements, Dr. Timofeev was the first to show reliable intracellular recordings in non-anesthetized and non-paralyzed behaving cats, and his lab is known worldwide for intracellular recordings of up to four sites simultaneously.
